In a significant ruling, a court in Kerala sentenced a 24-year-old woman to death for her involvement in the high-profile murder of her boyfriend in 2022. The individual, named Greeshma, was convicted of murder on Friday, January 17.

The Neyyattinkara Additional District Sessions Court has scheduled the sentencing for Monday, January 20. Additionally, the court imposed a three-year prison sentence on her uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, who is the third accused in the case.
In determining the appropriate punishment, the court remarked, βThe invitation extended to Sharon under the guise of sexual intimacy, followed by the commission of the crime, cannot be overlooked. It is the duty of the State to enforce penalties for criminal behavior. The evidence, including Sharon’s recording of the questionable juice despite Greeshma’s request not to film, suggests that he had suspicions about the situation. Sharon struggled for his life for 11 days without taking a single drop of water.β
The court highlighted that the convict had undermined her boyfriend’s trust by engaging in emotional manipulation. t also stated that she failed to provide any evidence to substantiate her allegations of mental pressure from the deceased. The court remarked that Greeshma’s assertion of physical abuse by Sharon is similarly unsubstantiated. In fact, Sharon never accused her in any of their communications. While Sharon remained loyal to the accused, she was concurrently in touch with her fiancΓ©.
Greeshma requested a more lenient sentence by highlighting her academic accomplishments, absence of previous criminal offenses, and her position as a single child. The court’s detailed 586-page judgment remarked that the age of the convict was not pertinent, considering the gravity of the crime committed.
Greeshma has been found guilty by the court on several counts, including Sections 302 (murder), 328 (causing harm through poison or other harmful agents), 364 (kidnapping with the intent to murder), and 203 (destruction of evidence or providing misleading information to protect a criminal) as per the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
